- Born in Chongqing, China to Ping and Lily Zhao
- Started playing tennis at the age of five after being encouraged by school teacher
- At the age of seven, emigrated to Canada and settled in the city of Richmond Hill, Ontario
- Played college tennis at Stanford University, ending her career with a 76–16 record and leading the team to the 2016 NCAA championship
